Defra’s Air Quality Expert Group – Vacancies

Defra is recruiting up to 7 individuals to serve as members of their Air Quality Expert Group (AQEG), starting from 1 April 2026.

Defra are seeking candidates with expertise in a field of science relevant to air quality and related pollutants. Candidates should be able to show knowledge of the range of the Committee’s work, demonstrate high levels of technical expertise in at least one of the areas detailed in the linked role specification in addition to possessing problem solving, collaboration and communication skills that feed into providing relevant advice to Government on the interface between air quality science and policy formulation and management.

AQEG plays a vital role in providing independent advice on the evidence base supporting air quality policies. AQEG’s advice helps shape Defra’s evidence base to robustly support policy development and implementation with the best available science. While AQEG’s primary role is in the provision of scientific advice to assist Defra’s strategic vision, members and the Chair are also called upon to provide ad hoc advice on occasion. Working on AQEG is a rewarding experience for any scientist with the right expertise wishing to extend the impact of their knowledge and research, further their influence and network and bring the best evidence to Government policy.
