In 2020, two-year-old Awaab Ishak tragically died after prolonged exposure to mould in his family’s social housing flat. An inquest revealed that, despite his parents’ repeated pleas for help, their concerns were ignored and no meaningful action was taken. In the wake of his death, the UK introduced Awaab’s Law, requiring social housing providers to urgently fix damp and mould hazards that pose a significant risk to tenants’ health. This marks a vital step toward improving indoor air quality in rented homes — and acknowledges a crucial truth: building occupants cannot always control the air they breathe on their own.
