Newcastle Welcomes the new Clean Air Zone

Climate Action Newcastle held an event on 28th January to celebrate the launch of Newcastle and Gateshead’s Clean Air Zone (CAZ) on 30th January. A dozen cyclists and about 20 walkers followed the boundary of CAZ, starting at Northumbria University.

In 2017 the government issued a legal direction which required councils in Newcastle, Gateshead and North Tyneside to take action to reduce illegal levels of traffic-related pollution in certain areas as quickly as possible.

As part of a commitment to tackling poor air quality, CAZ will also support efforts to tackle climate change by reducing carbon emissions from vehicles on the roads.

The inclusion of an interactive map will inform people of the CAZ boundaries.
